“By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread.” With these words, God cursed Adam and all mankind in Genesis 3 in response to human’s disobedience. David says in the Psalms that God’s works are marvelous. After a hard day’s work tilling the ground, when the knots begin to unwind, and your heart has relaxed into the pattern and rhythm of the earth, you begin to realize that even God’s curse is marvelous. At least, that is what I realize each year as we plant gardens and eat their produce.
